The report states that Tim Cook and Eddy Cue (respectively Apple CEO and Head of Apple Services) met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell during the Sun Valley Conference this past weekend. Although what the meeting was about was not disclosed, it is likely that they talked about acquiring broadcast rights to NFL games.

Games are distributed free to Apple TV+ subscribers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and South Korea.
Apple also announced an exclusive streaming deal with Major League Soccer, which will begin with the 2023 season. However, this will be available as a separate subscription within the Apple TV app — though some games can be watched for free by Apple TV+ subscribers.
Additionally, Apple is making improvements to their platforms when it comes to live sports streaming. With iOS 15.6 and tvOS 15.6, users will be able to pause and even restart a live match from the beginning.

Apple already owns the rights to Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer, so losing Sunday Ticket isn't the end of its sports efforts. Also, NFL Sunday Ticket is only broadcasting rights to out-of-market games — there will be other opportunities for Apple to secure the rights to broadcast American football.
