If the AR-15 is an American rifle. I think we have to agree that it does, and that the AR-10 is an American-made rifle like Rocky Balboa. Bigger, stronger, faster and the rest is average.

In the early 1950s, George Sullivan founded ArmaLite in Hollywood, California as a division of the Fairchild Aircraft Corporation. He quickly hired Eugene Stoner as chief engineer after meeting him at a local shooting range.

After World War II, the United States and almost the rest of the world began looking for the next generation of service rifles.

Everyone knows that semi-auto is the way of the future and detachable magazines are a must.

Most also agreed that calibers smaller than world standards (such as .30-06 for the US, 8mm Mauser for Germany, 7.62x54r for Russia, and .303 British for the UK) would greatly improve combat effectiveness. .

To that end, NATO (after being heavily armed by the United States) adopted the 7.62×51 NATO rifle. But we still needed a new gun to shoot it.

Led by the US Army the goal of the trial was to find and accept the next American handgun. The front runners were the T44 (which would become the M14), the Springfield T47 and the T48 (a copy of the FN FAL).

After working on the design and creation of several rifles such as the AR-7, Stoner and his team quickly developed the AR-10 in time to send the rifle into testing in 1954-55.

At the time, the ArmaLite design was revolutionary. Using mostly plastic and aluminum, the AR-10 weighs just 6.85 pounds. That's compared to the T44's 9.2 pounds and the T48's 10.2 pounds.

But life isn't all sunshine and roses for Stoner and ArmaLite. Over Stoner's vehement objections, the guns on trial had untried composite metal barrels.

"If you're not sure, a ball that misses a step and goes out of your barrel is considered a bad thing."

This failure was the end of the line for the AR-10 in US service. The T44 was adopted as the M14 in 1957 and the AR-10 rifle would become a footnote in history for the next decade.

However, even with this major setback - the AR-10 is not completely gone. During the late 1950s, ArmaLite produced AR-10s for several military contracts overseas, including West Germany, Sudan, India, Cuba, and more.

In the 1990s, Stoner began working at Knight's Armament and was the first designer of the SR-25 - a highly improved and updated AR-10 that incorporated design improvements made over the M16A2.

In 2000, USSOCOM adopted the SR-25 as the Mk 11 Mod 0 making it the first AR-10 derivative to be adopted.

50 years after the ArmaLite AR-10 barrel exploded in a test, in 2007 the US Army adopted the conversion of the SR-25 to the M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS).

Although it took several decades, Stoner's AR-10 made it to the big leagues.

Unfortunately, there is no large military build of the AR-10, the scope is not as standardized as the AR-15.

Instead of one standard that makes everything interchangeable, there are two most common models - DPMS and SR-25/ArmaLite.

Legion Defense Ar 15 Review

The most common is DPMS, but both major brands still make SR-25 / ArmaLite models but neither is on our current list.

In my opinion, part of being the best is giving the end user as much choice as possible, and doing that with the AR-10 needs a DPMS model.

One of the main areas where the AR-10 rifle can shine is hunting. Often chambered in .308 Win / 7.62×51 NATO or 6.5 Creedmoor, the AR-10 can take ethical game in North America at least a few hundred yards.

Ar 10 Reviews

Many AR-10s are going to be on the heavy side for hunting, but keeping the weight down to something manageable is easier if you keep that in mind.

If you're worried about predators, 10 or 20 rounds of pumping should be better.

There aren't many gas guns that are really long range guns. But the fact is that bolt guns are still dominant in this field.

But an AR-10 is clearly doable and a lot of fun to shoot - be prepared to drop $$$$ on it and feed a lot of ammo.

Personally, I like a long-range AR-10. I took mine to 800 yards with ease and really enjoyed it.

If you want to get the most out of your long-range setup, I highly recommend the 6.5 Creedmoor, but we'll talk about that in more detail later.

To me, the "farm gun" is for those who work the land or spend their work days outside. Maybe you raise livestock, maybe you're a farmer, maybe you keep equipment in the middle of nowhere - whatever the reason, you spend more time with four-legged businesses than two-legged businesses.

Therefore, you may want to keep a gun with you as a "just in case" option. Whether it's a bear, cougar, or wolf, you may encounter something that just won't take no for an answer.

If so, the AR-10 is unique. Adjustable, large caliber, easy to carry, and with lots of rounds.

The AR-10 would be overkill for things like zombies or general collapse of civilization. But if it's something like an attacker wearing body armor or aliens in space - the AR-10 is just fine.

When you need more punch, the only thing to do is a larger caliber. And for AR-style scopes, that means going from an AR-15 to an AR-10.

If you look hard enough, you can find AR-10s in odd calibers like .30-06, 300 Win Mag, .260 Remington and more.

Almost all major brands of AR-10s have them in both calibers, as well as barrels and BCGs. Anything outside of these two options will be proprietary and difficult to obtain.

Debate on .308 Win/7.62×51 NATO Vs. 6.5 Creedmoor is a bit out of our scope right now so I'll give you my thoughts and reasons and let people argue in the comments about the rest.

If you want an inexpensive ammo option or are limited to less than 800 yards, get the .308 Win / 7.62×51 NATO.

Both calibers will be very similar in game, in fact, the 6.5 Creedmoor will have higher energy on target beyond 450 yards than the .308 Win / 7.62×51 NATO.

If I had to pick the most expensive AR-10 in the world, it would be the Aero M5. It is very hard to beat him.

I built the M5 and I love it. I have shot it out to 900 yards many times and it is a solid range.

In fact, I shot at him and burned my first barrel at him. About 3000 rubles the barrel of Creedmoor 6.5 gave up the wind and it was time to replace it. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to it yet so my poor M5 sits here barrelless for now.

The barrel is a consumable item but that's totally expected. As for the rest of the guns... still alive and kicking.

The Aero Precision has a nice list of features and upgrades over more standard options, but the price hardly budges. The only downside is that the Aero doesn't offer as many factory options as other brands.

But Aero is one of the few brands that offers all the parts separately or in a complete gun.
