The Pentagon is home to the US Department of Defense. It was built in accelerated mode during World War II. As a symbol of the U.S. Army, the phrase Ptagon is often used as a metonymy for the Department of Defense and its leadership.

Located in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the building was designed by American architect George Bergstrom and built by contractor John McShane. the ground was demolished on September 11, 1941, and the building was dedicated on January 15, 1943. Gerald Brehon Somervell was the main impetus behind congressional approval for the project;

Colonel Leslie Groves was responsible for overseeing the project for the US Army Corps which controlled it.

The Pentagon is the largest office building in the world, with approximately 6.5 million square feet (150 acres; 60 ha), of which 3.7 million square feet (85 acres; 34 ha) is used as offices.

And another 3,000 non-military support workers work in Ptagon. It has five sides, five stories above ground, two basement levels, and five annular corridors per floor totaling 17.5 miles (28.2 km).

From the corridors. A five-acre (2.0 ha) pentagonal plaza, nicknamed "ground zero", would be the primary target of a nuclear war.

Pentagon City Planning Study: Scope

In 2001, Ptagon was damaged in the September 11 attacks. Five al-Qaeda hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the west side of the building, killing themselves and 184 others: 59 on board and 125 in the Pentagon.

It was the first significant foreign attack on Washington's government facilities since the city was burned by the British in the War of 1812. After the attacks, the west side of the building was renovated, adding a small indoor memorial and chapel. The outdoor memorial to the victims of September 11 was opened in 2008.

Starting from the north and moving clockwise, its five façades are a shopping terrace, a riverside terrace, a concourse (or subway station), a south car park, and a helipad.

On the north side of the trans Mall building, which also has a portico, leads to a 600-foot (180 m) terrace where ceremonies are held. The Trans River, which has a terrace rising 6 m (20 ft) high, is on the northeast side overlooking the lagoon and facing Washington. A stepped terrace on the Trans River leads to the lagoon; and the runway was used to transport personnel between Bolling Air Force Base and the Pentagon until the late 1960s.

The main transit for visitors is on the southeast side, as is the Ptagon metro station and bus station.

Also on the southeast side of the building's second floor is a lobby with a small shopping mall. The south parking lot is connected to the southwest side, and the west side of the Pentagon overlooks Washington Boulevard.

The concrete rings are marked "A" through "E" (with additional rings "F" and "G" in the basement). The "E" ring offices are the only offices facing the outside and are fully occupied by senior officials. Office numbers move clockwise around each ring and consist of two parts: the number of the nearest corridor (1 to 10) followed by the bay number (00 to 99), so office numbers range from 100 to 1099 from the central courtyard, starting from corridor 1 from the south of Hall d. Each numbered radial corridor intersects with the corresponding numbered group of offices (for example, the corridor is divided by 5 office buildings of the 500 series). The building has a number of historical exhibits, especially in the "A" and "E" rings.

The underground floors in Ptagon have the letters "B" for basement and "M" for mezzanine. The hall is located on the second floor of the trans metro. The above-ground floors are numbered 1 through 5. Room numbers are given as floor, counter and office number (which in turn is the number of the nearest corridor followed by the bay number). Thus, office 2B315 is on the second floor, Ring B, and closest to Corridor 3 (between Corridors 2 and 3). One way to get to this office is to go to the second floor, go to Ring A (innermost), go to Corridor 3, and turn left on Ring B to reach Bay 15.

The Naval Base Building (front) and the Ordnance Building were temporary structures built at the National Center during World War I. The War Department was headquartered in the Ordnance Building for several years before moving to the Pentagon.

Prior to the construction of the Pentagon, the U.S. War Department was housed in the Conflict Building, a temporary structure built during World War I on Constitution Avenue at the National Center. The War Department, a civilian agency created to manage the U.S. military, was spread out in additional temporary buildings at the National Center as well as dozens of other buildings in Washington, Maryland, and Virginia. In the late 1930s, during the Great Depression and the federal construction program, a new War Department building was constructed at 21st and C Streets in Fog Bottom, but upon completion the new building did not solve the department's space problems. It became the headquarters of the State Department.

When World War II broke out in Europe in 1939, the War Department expanded rapidly to meet its immediate needs and in anticipation of US involvement in the conflict. Secretary of War Hry L. Stimson found it unacceptable that the Ordnance building was overcrowded and departmental offices were spread out in additional locations.

In May 1941, Stimson told US President Franklin Roosevelt that the War Department needed additional space. On July 17, 1941, a congressional hearing was held, organized by Congressman Clifton Woodrum (D-VA), regarding proposals for new War Department buildings. Woodrum pressed Brigadier General Gerald Hugh Raybold, who was reorganizing the War Department, for a "total solution" to the department's "space problem" instead of constructing temporary buildings. Raybold agreed to report to Congress within five days. The War Department summoned its construction chief, Gerald Brehon Somervell, to draw up a plan.

Government officials agreed that the War Department building, officially designated Federal Office Building No. 1, should be built across the Potomac River in Arlington County, Virginia.
