Today we take a look at the IASW Suppressed 22LR AR-15 from Navina Arms. Small, light, cheap to shoot and very quiet, great for practicing IASW skills or snapping in the backyard without alerting the neighbors. Hell, you don't even notice the person standing next to you. Is it worth spending nearly $1,000 of your hard-earned money on a suppressed rimfire AR? Let's take a look.

I've resisted the urge to have an AR-15 chambered in .22LR for years. And frankly, it feels hypocritical; I've preached the blessings of the suppressed rim whistle for years, and I've never mentioned having an AR chambered in a single cartridge guaranteed to put a smile on everyone's face. Custom-made .22LR AR-15s may feel like toys compared to their full-function cousins, but that's no reason to dismiss them as guns that aren't worth your time. So far, I've failed you by not highlighting a rig that's a joy to shoot, cheap and quiet.

New Ar 15 Rifles For 2022

The Innovative Weapons IASW is available in two versions: a double stomp short barrel rifle and a 16.1″ rifle with a permanently attached suppressor tube and hand guard. The IASW is built from a Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 base rifle with the barrel cut to 4.5″. This barrel length is the magic number to keep most .22LR ammunition at subsonic velocities to achieve the maximum amount of noise reduction.

Although Innovative Arms calls the IASW an integrally suppressed firearm, purists disagree due to the lack of porting of the barrel. Since neither the NFA nor the non-NFA versions can be fired without their included suppressors, I would argue that they are at least pseudo-fully suppressed firearms. I doubt this will turn off many potential customers.

With a base MSRP of around $500 for the S&W M&P15-22 and a quality rimfire suppressor running around $350, it could be argued that you could build a 22LR AR15 cheaper than buying a complete "combined" system. However, when it comes to suppressing most calibers, internal volume is king. And, depending on the model you choose, the Innovative Arms IASW has two or three times the volume of standard rimfire suppressors. Results are visible.

An added benefit for those who decide to go with a two stamp SBR and suppressor combo is the included 1/2×28 mounting adapter, which allows the IASW to be used in other rifle and pistol hosts. Again, since the 16.1″ model has a permanently attached suppressor tube, it is locked to one setting for life.

Best .22 Ar 15?

Which brings up a good point: Why doesn't Innovative Arms offer a pistol version? If you open your trusty NFA guidebook (y/k doesn't have one), you'll recall that US firearms law says that if a firearm begins its life as a rifle, it's always considered a rifle, even if you trade it in. . From the stock for the bracket. And since S&W doesn't currently offer a pistol version of the M&P15-22, Innovative Arms is stuck building rifles in either NFA or non-NFA flavors. Note: The M&P15-22P pistol is unfortunately out of production.

So why not buy or build a 10/22 or other semi-auto rimfire rifle or pistol? First, an AR-style rifle allows you to build skills and train with all the ergonomics and muscle memory of a real AR-15. Without recoil, noise levels and intimidation can come with all nasty black rifles. New, younger and younger shooters can shoot IASW for hours without needing hearing protection or recoil. Repetition is key to becoming an efficient shooter. Obviously there are conversion kits that allow you to build a rimfire AR-15 over an existing 5.56mm lower.

Back to price. Yes, $1,100 to $1,300 is a lot of money to drop on a rimfire rifle. But if you consider the whole package, it's worth the extra investment to have a factory suppressed system.

Like most single-core dampers, the IASW is prone to a small amount of first-round pop (FRP). But I would characterize the FRP as barely visible under normal conditions.

The IASW's suppression levels are excellent, ranking with the best threaded rimfire suppressors on the market today. However, since I don't own a short-barreled semi-auto rifle, my comparisons are relegated to pistol hosts. If you're looking for extreme tranquility, you won't be disappointed.

While the initial investment for the Innovative Weapons IASW is slightly higher than buying a standard rimfire AR platform and threader separately, the performance and size of this system is worth a hard look. Pulling the trigger on the IASW is a laugh-worthy experience. Suppressed rimfire life.

The modular nature of the gun means it can be adapted to a variety of purposes, from home defense to hunting to competition. The AR-15 can be adapted to fire a variety of calibers. You know most of them. Calibers like 5.56mm/223, 300 Blackout, 224 Valkyrie and 6mm ARC. The AR-15 22 Conversion Kit changes how your AR-15 performs. A typical AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle that uses a direct attack system to cycle the action and feed a new round into the chamber. The expanding gases from the combustion of each cartridge are purged and returned to the action of the gun. These gases move the bolt of the gun to the rear, reset the trigger and eject the spent casing. The movement of the bolt is slowed and reversed by a spring in the buffer tube. The bolt then moves forward and loads a new round into the firing chamber. From there, the whole process is ready to start again.

The process is different when using a 22 conversion kit on your AR-15. What we are going to look at today is made by CMMG. It replaces your charging handle and 5.56mm Bolt Carrier Group (BCG) with an insert platform that fires the 22LR. Installing the kit is really easy. As you remove the bolt for cleaning, open the top of your AR and remove the BCG and charging handle. Replace the BCG with a 22 conversion kit and charging handle, lock up your rifle and you're good to go.

The CMMG AR-15 22 conversion kit works differently than a regular AR-15. It uses the force of the bullet firing to push the bolt back, cycle the action and load a new round into the chamber. The gases from the round fire blow the bolt back.
