Arcflash Labs Gr1 - Looking for a handheld electromagnetic rail gun? Check out Arcflash Labs' GR-1 "Anvil" Semi-Automatic High-Voltage Gauss Rifle
By David Crane Image Credit: Arcflash Labs August 8, 2021 We at (DR) are always excited about futuristic weapons, especially handheld ones. So when the Arcflash Labs GR-1 "Anvil" 8-speed semi-automatic high voltage Gauss rifle came to our attention recently, we were certainly intrigued. Although the GR-1 "Anvil" does not really look like prime time, it is still very interesting and deserves a brief description. It's essentially a handheld electromagnetic railgun capable of "accelerating any ferromagnetic projectile (less than 1/2" in diameter) to over 200 fps and delivering up to 75 foot-pounds of energy initial". And while that doesn't make the GR-1 the best choice for home defense, it certainly makes for powder-free fun at the range or in your basement — not that we recommend it. In fact, not only do we not recommend that you shoot the GR-1 anvil in your basement, but we recommend that you give it up because it frankly scares us. Why does it scare us? Well, because of this little tidbit on their website: "A full disclaimer must be signed by end user prior to shipment." It reads "experimental" to us, it definitely sounds experimental, and we have certainly never had to do this when buying a traditional firearm. Either way, if you're willing to take your life into your own hands, we guess the GR-1 Gauss Rifle is a lot of fun to shoot. Unfortunately, the video we watched didn't show the makers actually firing it on the range as we'd hoped. See it here: But we saw a pre-engineered Gauss reel/gun being fired in their workshop here: Oh and if you want to try their fully automatic product, the EMG-01B, they have a page and video of here too. And here's a video: The following information about the Gauss Arcflash GR-1 "Anvil" rifle is taken from the company's website: "GR-1 "ANVIL" $3,750.00 $3,375.00 AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER with 10% off off 75 ft -lbs Gauss Semi-Auto Rifle The World's First Manual Gauss Rifle - (Alpha) Lot 1 SKU: GR-1-ALPHA CATEGORIES: ACCELERATORS FULLY ASSEMBLED RIFLE NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER Lead Time: approx. 6 months For more information please see our ALPHA PRODUCTION VERSION SHIPPING POLICY - Full disclaimer must be signed by end user prior to shipment - Please see our updated SHIPPING POLICY as our terms of sale may have changed - Unit comes with (1) GR - 1 Gauss Rifle, (1) Rechargeable Battery and (1) Hard Carrying Case - MAGAZINES AND AMMO SOLD SEPARATELY - MAGAZINE SOLD SEPARATELY Arcflash Labs GR-1 "Anvil" is an 8-stage high voltage semi-automatic Gauss rifle. It is the most powerful bolt-action rifle ever sold to the general public, and also (quite possibly) the most powerful handgun ever made. The GR-1 is capable of accelerating any ferromagnetic projectile (less than 1/2 inch in diameter) to over 200 fps and can deliver up to 75 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. The GR-1 uses the world's most advanced capacitor charging system, a quasi-resonant dual-clamp inverter that allows the GR-1 to fire up to 20 rounds per minute (at full power) or up to 100 strokes per minute at 50% Power. The GR-1 is capable of accepting projectiles of 3 different standard lengths (32mm, 42mm and 52mm) with a unique interchangeable magazine system. Arcflash Labs recommends using 1232, 1242E, or 1252 fittings, but any steel rod, fastener, or pin between [11-12.6mm diameter] and [30-52mm length] should work. Please use caution when burning non-OEM fittings and refer to the owner's manual for instructions before burning. Arcflash Labs WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE for device damage or personal injury caused by burning non-OEM fittings. The GR-1 "Anvil" is a hand-held, shoulder-mounted Gaussian rifle manufactured by Arcflash Labs. Yeah, it's great to live in a future where we have real Gauss guns, isn't it?
First, a bit of terminology. It is accurately defined as a Gauss Rifle, Spool Gun, or Linear Accelerator (although "Gauss Rifle" is a bit misleading as it is a smoothbore launcher). It works by means of a series of coils which are energized to create electromagnetic fields and slide an iron projectile through the barrel. Each coil accelerates the projectile faster by controlling a series of optical gates that turn off the coil as the projectile passes past it. The GR-1 uses 8 coils that draw between 4000 and 16000 amps of electricity from 8 high voltage capacitors. These coils are capable of accelerating a 1/2 inch diameter steel spindle at approximately 75 m/s (240 fps). The latest technology in the GR-1 is hardware that allows a standard Li-ion battery (25V) to fully charge this capacitor bank in approximately 3 seconds.
Essentially, the GR-1 is an alpha version of the prototype. It's the equivalent of the first Wright Flyer - a demonstration of technology and a means of gaining experience and skill in the manufacture of coil-operated weapons. As capacitor technology improves, we will see the capabilities of spool guns improve from the level of airguns to the level of pistols and eventually real rifles and beyond. Arcflash is a leader in this technology and I'm grateful that they agreed to lend me one of their first production guns for this film!
Legal Information: The GR-1 and bolt-action rifles in general are not federally regulated as firearms. Under the law, a "firearm" is specifically defined as propelling a projectile by combustion, which a firearm does not. Arcflash treats its coil guns as airguns out of great legal caution, and therefore there are several locations the GR-1 is not shipped to due to state or local muzzle energy regulations for airguns. pressurized air.
